Gaffer Hexam Character Analysis

Gaffer Hexam is a waterman on the Thames who is the father of Lizzie and Charley. He is a gruff, simple man who has no interest in education for himself or for his children. He also drinks too much. Gaffer discovers the body of George Radfoot (which gets mistaken for John Harmon) and is briefly suspected of killing John Harmon. Gaffer believes that he knows everything about the river, but he dies in a random boating accident, showing the dangers of pride.
