Yusuf
After their house is blown up by the government, Yusuf’s grandfather hides Jamal and Bibi in his home. There, Jamal watches football with him late into the night, an experience that inspires Jamal to become a professional football player. He believes if he can become famous enough, he can return to Afghanistan and reform its government. Though Yusuf’s grandfather does not outright endorse Jamal’s plan, his words and affection still inspire him; hearing Yusuf’s grandfather explains how his people had been persecuted in Afghanistan for a long time makes Jamal realizes how truly important his plan is. Thus, though Jamal only spends one night in Yusuf’s grandfather’s house, the experience has a lasting impact on him.
