Life magazine’s Franklin Roth arrives the next week to watch Elizabeth’s live show. He quickly realizes that Elizabeth is unwilling to participate in the interview and, respecting her autonomy, decides to leave. However, Elizabeth, wanting to continue, asks a security guard to stop Roth. She then invites Roth to her home, showcasing her laboratory and the rowing machine. She also discusses her research on abiogenesis. Initially, the interview lacks excitement, so Roth boldly asks about Calvin, even though he told himself he wouldn’t. At first, Roth thinks he has ruined the interview. However, to his surprise, Elizabeth begins telling him the story of her time with Calvin.
Roth’s decision to leave after realizing Elizabeth’s reluctance is an act of professional courtesy that is seemingly rare in his industry. His demeanor impresses Elizabeth, causing her to have a sudden change of heart. She eager to share with Roth until Calvin’s name comes up, causing her to worry that he is just like every other reporter. Nonetheless, she decides to put her faith in him and tell him the truth about her life with Calvin.
