Chase Ambrose Character Analysis

Chase Ambrose is a middle-school football star who falls from his roof and sustains a concussion, giving him amnesia. Possessing almost no memories, he can’t even recognize his mother, Tina, or his brother, Johnny. Tina, Johnny, and Chase’s doctor want Chase to avoid football for a year, but Tina’s ex-husband, Chase’s macho father, Frank, disdains this medical advice and insists that Chase should play. As amnesiac Chase begins eighth grade, he reacquaints himself with his friends, football players Aaron Hakimian and Bear Bratsky. Aaron and Bear tell Chase that a juvenile court sentenced all three of them to community service but suggest that the court was overreacting to a funny “prank.” When Chase befriends geeky video-club president Brendan Espinoza and joins the video club, however, he discovers that many video club kids consider him a bully. Chase bullied one boy, Joel Weber, so badly that Joel’s parents sent him to boarding school, a fact that Joel’s twin sister, Shoshanna, makes sure everyone remembers. Doing community service at an assisted living facility with Aaron and Bear, Chase befriends an elderly veteran, Mr. Solway. Chase and Shoshanna end up filming interviews with Mr. Solway for a video contest, a project that sparks a friendship between them. Eventually, Chase learns that, prior to his accident, he stole Mr. Solway’s Medal of Honor; he, Aaron, and Bear intended to sell the medal and split the earnings. Chase, horrified by his past behavior, returns the medal and takes sole responsibility for the theft; at his juvenile court hearing, he refuses to lie and claim that he’s a completely different person than he was before his accident—a scrupulous honesty that demonstrates his personal growth. Mr. Solway bursts into the hearing and claims that he lent Chase the medal. Saved by Mr. Solway’s fib, Chase becomes a video-club member and a football player, widely liked due to the improvements in his personality triggered by his memory loss.

That’s when it hits me how this must seem to the teachers. The music room is a disaster area. Instruments, music stands, books, and papers are strewn everywhere, the whole place buried in foam. The school’s three most notorious bullies are right there. One of them—Chase—still wields a fire extinguisher. And their number one target—Joel—is down on the floor with a rapidly swelling face, obviously the victim of an assault.

“It isn’t what it looks like!” I gasp, and then bite my tongue. What if it’s exactly what it looks like?
