Mr. Solway is a sarcastic, lonely Korean War veteran who won a Medal of Honor for opening an enemy tank and killing the enemy soldiers inside with a grenade. He lives in the assisted living facility where middle-school bullies Chase Ambrose, Aaron Hakimian, and Bear Bratsky are sentenced to community service. When Chase steals the medal with Aaron and Bear’s assistance, Mr. Solway assumes he lost it: a childless widower, he believes he’s gone cognitively downhill since his wife died. After Chase develops amnesia due to a concussion, he notices a photo in Mr. Solway’s room of Mr. Solway receiving the medal from President Truman. He starts asking Mr. Solway questions, eventually befriending him and becoming a kind of adopted grandson. Mr. Solway admits that he thinks the action for which he won the medal was stupid more than brave. In addition, he can’t remember doing it: the subsequent violence so traumatized him that his brain repressed the memory. He doesn’t like war and doesn’t think of himself as a hero. Chase proposes to fellow video-club member Shoshanna Weber that Mr. Soloway would be a good interviewee for her National Video Journalism Contest project. Chase and Shoshanna reconnect Mr. Solway to his life, which he thought was basically finished. When Chase realizes that he stole Mr. Solway’s medal, he returns it and takes sole responsibility for the theft. Mr. Solway is initially devastated—but he appears at Chase’s juvenile court and tells the judge he shouldn’t prosecute. When the judge insists on sentencing Chase, Mr. Solway claims no theft occurred, lying that he gave Chase the medal himself.
