Jenna’s Father/Matthew Fox Character Analysis

Matthew Fox, father to Jenna Fox and husband to Claire Fox, is a doctor and medical researcher who met his wife Claire through her mother Lily, who was chief of internal medicine when he was a resident at Boston University Hospital. In the course of his medical research, Matthew invented Bio Gel, a science-fictional substance that allows for the indefinite preservation of transplant organ and the technological supplementation of damaged organs. This invention made Matthew very rich. When his daughter Jenna is near-fatally injured by a car accident and subsequent runaway infections, Matthew realizes that he can use Bio Gel to save her life—but that the interventions required are currently illegal. Nevertheless, with his wife Claire’s enthusiastic support, Matthew uses his scientific knowledge and financial resources to essentially rebuild Jenna’s body as a cyborg and “upload” her brain into the cyborg body. Despite the possible ethical dilemmas involved in this action, Matthew is unrepentantly certain that he did the right thing and that the new, cyborg Jenna is the same person as his pre-accident daughter. When he preserves the disembodied minds of Jenna’s friends Kara and Locke, who died in the car accident that maimed her, to prove that Jenna wasn’t criminally reckless in the accident, he is also unconcerned with whether living as disembodied minds might be a torment to them. However, he forgives Jenna after she destroys the uploads of her friends to free them.
