The Poppy War

by

R. F. Kuang

Kesegi is Auntie Fang and Uncle Fang’s eight-year-old son; his parents have essentially made Rin raise him, and so the two are extremely close. Auntie Fang desperately wants to keep Kesegi from discovering her dealings in opium, which Rin uses to blackmail her aunt into letting her study for the Keju. When Rin leaves for Sinegard, she sharply tells Kesegi to leave her alone and rejects his attempts to hug her—and she never writes to him or sees him again, except for when the chimei imitates his likeness.
