Auntie Fang Character Analysis

Auntie Fang is Rin’s adoptive mother; Kesegi is her biological son with her husband, Uncle Fang. She’s a cold and shrewd woman, which serves her well in her secret business as an opium smuggler. Running her operation out of her shop, Auntie Fang always seems to know when people are cheating her, and she habitually bides her time and then kills them when it’s convenient for her. Auntie Fang is responsible for hiring a matchmaker to arrange Rin’s marriage to a merchant and imports inspector, which will then give the Fangs a monopoly on their smuggled opium. Auntie Fang frames the marriage to Rin as a way to gain power and prestige—if she gets her husband addicted to opium and bides her time until he dies.

Chapter 1  Quotes

“But once he [trusts you]? You start plying him with opium—just a little bit at first, though I doubt he’s never smoked before. Then you give him more and more every day. Do it at night right after he’s finished with you, so he always associates it with pleasure and power.

“Give him more and more until he is fully dependent on it, and on you. Let it destroy his body and mind. You’ll be more or less married to a breathing corpse, yes, but you will have his riches, his estates, and his power.”
