Jacquie is Durrell’s good-humored wife, who is initially skeptical of the idea of buying a gorilla. However, like everyone else, she falls in love with N’Pongo when the baby gorilla arrives. Although Durrell’s account of his own relationship with the ape takes more precedence than Jacquie’s, she clearly plays a nurturing role in N’Pongo’s life. For example, she also worries intensely about the gorilla when he becomes ill, and she accompanies Durrell to the market to select fruit that might appeal to N'Pongo's appetite.
