Dr. Filostrato Character Analysis

Dr. Filostrato is an Italian physiologist in the N.I.C.E. He knows about the Head’s existence but not its true evil nature; he believes it to be the product of his scientific genius and proof that science can enable humanity to transcend organic life. Filostrato believes that nature is impure and that humans must purify themselves by distancing themselves from it. He learns the truth about the Head at the end of the novel, when Wither and Straik sacrifice him to it.

“In us organic life has produced Mind. It has done its work. After that we want no more of it. By little and little, of course; slowly we learn how. Learn to make our brains live with less and less body: learn to build our bodies directly with chemicals […].”
