The Opera’s chief gas-man, in charge of the building’s electricity, is found unconscious, due to the effect of a narcotic, on two occasions: on the night of Carlotta’s croaking and on the night of Christine Daaé’s disappearance. Although Inspector Mifroid is unable to draw satisfying conclusions from these events, they serve as an indication to the reader that the Phantom must have drugged him to control the electricity and manipulate lighting for his own purposes.
