Lord Jim

by

Joseph Conrad

Chester is an excitable Australian man who believes he’s found a get-rich-quick scheme with a guano island (guano refers to the excrement of seabirds and bats for use as fertilizer), and he urges Marlow to invite Jim to join this guano expedition. Marlow refuses, Chester goes ahead without Jim, getting himself and his whole crew killed in a hurricane. Chester represents the arrogance and greed of white men in Asia, as well as the potential consequences of following this greed.
