My Oedipus Complex

by

Frank O’Connor

The Geneys are a family that live up the road from Larry’s family. They are not financially comfortable, and recently had a baby. The Geneys are referenced in a disagreement Larry has with his mother. Larry’s mother tells him that their family will not be able to have a baby until Larry’s father returns from the war, insisting that this is the only way they will be able to afford the cost of a baby.” Because he knows the Geneys to be poor, Larry claims that their baby must be cheap, and says that his mother ought to follow their example by settling for a less expensive baby.
