Nausea

by

Jean-Paul Sartre

Charles is the husband of Lucie, the charwoman at the Hotel Printania. A factory worker, he is young, handsome, and poor. According to Roquentin, Charles married the older and less attractive Lucie for her money, but their marriage is unhappy. Although Charles doesn’t beat Lucie or cheat on her with other women, he drinks constantly, and Roquentin believes that he may have tuberculosis. Roquentin encounters Charles and Lucie on the street at night, and watches as Charles speaks cruelly to her and pushes her before leaving her on the sidewalk alone.
