Dada Character Analysis

Dada is Adah and Francis’s fourth child, a daughter. Adah finds out she is pregnant with Dada after she tries to get contraception without Francis’s knowledge and Francis beats her violently for the attempt. Adah seeks abortifacient pills from her family doctor, but though the doctor gives her the pills, they don’t work. Dada is a small, healthy, beautiful baby girl whom Adah nicknames “Sunshine.” Her birth motivates Adah to stop working; the break from work that Adah takes to care for Dada gives Adah the time to write her first novel manuscript, The Bride Price, showing the compatibility and parallels between maternity and childbirth on the one hand and creative, artistic production on the other.
