The moon sends the unicorn to watch over Yvaine, and the unicorn also takes it upon itself to protect Tristran. Though at first glance the unicorn appears to be simply a white horse with a horn on its head, Tristran discovers that it’s somehow wilder than a normal horse—and though it agrees to carry Yvaine and Tristran, it’s not easy to ride or meant to be ridden at all. The unicorn saves Tristran and Yvaine from Morwanneg by stabbing Morwanneg in the shoulder and killing her minions, Billy and Brevis, but Morwanneg kills the unicorn by stabbing it in the eye. Morwanneg continues to use the unicorn’s natural magic after it’s dead, using its blood to communicate with the Lilim and taking its magical horn back to her sisters.

“The boy? The one in the inn? With the unicorn?”
“Yes.”
“You should have let me take it back then, for my sisters and me. We could have been young again, well into the next age of the world. Your boy will break it, or waste it, or lose it. They all do.”
