Mirka Character Analysis

In the story in Jimmie’s mum’s book, Mirka is the oldest woman who lives in Oto’s village. She and her brother, Guntis, act as wise authority figures in the village, and Mirka is the one who raises Anka when the villagers find the baby in the well. Years later, when Oto and Anka are married and expecting their first baby, Mirka warns them to leave the village before the war arrives—but they refuse to listen. When she and Oto are the only villagers left alive or uncaptured, she gives Oto the Bone Sparrow necklace and sends him to find Iliya, her grandson in the mountains, who will then help Oto find Anka.
