Doloritas Character Analysis

Doloritas is one of two Dominican sisters whom Amabelle meets while fleeing from the massacre. Doloritas and her sister Dolores only speak Spanish, but they are traveling to Haiti because they hope to find Doloritas’s Haitian partner (who was taken from their bed) there. Doloritas has promised to learn Creole and live with him in Haiti, showing how cultural and linguistic identity can be flexible, even for the Dominican people whom Trujillo insists must remain pure. Along with Dolores, Doloritas leaves the group at Wilner’s request, because the sisters will be safe traveling alone due to their ability to speak Spanish fluently.
