The Farming of Bones

by

Edwidge Danticat

Don Gilbert is married to Doña Sabine, and together they form one of the richest Haitian families in the part of the Dominican Republic where Amabelle lives. While their wealth initially protects them from the racist prejudices of Dominican culture, they are threatened like all the other Haitians once the massacre begins. They shelter Félice and a few others in their home, but they also acknowledge that sadly they can’t help all the Haitians who are in danger.
