Boy

by

Roald Dahl

Ellis is a student at St. Peter’s School. In his narration, Roald calls him “Little Ellis.” While Roald is in the infirmary for a fever, Ellis occupies the bed next to him because he has a large boil on his leg. As Roald watches, the school doctor throws a towel over Ellis’s eyes and punctures the boil while Ellis screams in pain. In his narration, Roald is struck by how odd it would be to allow a boy to undergo such a procedure without any pain relief now.
