The Silent Patient

The Silent Patient

by

Alex Michaelides

Yuri, an immigrant from Latvia, is the kindly head nurse at the Grove. He is particularly fond of Alicia, and he tends to act as a go-between for Alicia and Theo. Yuri is one of the first people to urge Theo against his obsession with Alicia, warning that Theo should “go home to Kathy, who loves you…and leave Alicia alone.” Despite Yuri’s lovely demeanor, however, he also reflects the novel’s focus on the gap between presentation and reality—towards the end of the story, Theo notices that Yuri is working with Elif to deal drugs in the ward.
