Because of their influence, conspiracy theories about the Jesuits abounded throughout Europe. To opponents of Jesuitism, the order was synonymous with cunning, casuistry, and crafty or subtle argumentation. It is likely that the disguised butler has both definitions in mind when he accuses Dr. Primrose of Jesuitism for his monarchist political beliefs.
