In the novel-within-the-novel Bonds, Dr. Frahm is the head doctor at the Swiss sanatorium where Helen’s father, Leopold, was initially treated and where Helen seeks treatment after she begins experiencing symptoms of mental illness. When Benjamin first approaches Dr. Frahm about using one of the hospital wings to treat Helen exclusively, Dr. Frahm refuses. Benjamin then hires someone to impugn Dr. Frahm’s methods and arranges to withhold medication from the hospital until Dr. Frahm submits to Benjamin’s demands. With that in mind, Dr. Frahm represents how Benjamin (and, by extension, Andrew) uses his financial resources to bully and bulldoze principled people who try to stand up to him. Dr. Frahm treats Helen using a combination of talk therapy, outdoor activities, and lithium salts. Helen appears to improve, but Benjamin is dissatisfied with the care, perhaps because as Helen improves, she acts coldly toward Benjamin. Benjamin ultimately replaces Dr. Frahm with Dr. Aftus.
