Ida’s Father Character Analysis

Ida’s father is an anarchist who immigrated to the U.S. from Italy. He rarely leaves Brooklyn and frequently regales Jack and Ida with stories of the direct political actions he undertook in Italy, which ultimately led to his exile. Ida’s father is Andrew’s opposite in almost every way. He vehemently opposes the kind of finance capital that Andrew represents and believes that the hierarchical power structures of U.S. industry are inherently exploitative. Ida’s father’s role as a foil to Andrew is further cemented when Andrew dies. While Andrew dies rich but alone, Ida’s father dies without much money but with a close relationship with Ida. With that in mind, Ida’s father represents the novel’s ideas about the shortcomings of Andrew’s devotion to wealth, as that wealth will never help Andrew find the kind of relationships that make life meaningful and worth living.

Book 3, Part 3 Quotes

I think of my father. He would always say that every dollar bill had been printed on paper ripped off a slave’s bill of sale. I can still hear him today. “Where does all this wealth here come from? Primitive accumulation. The original theft of land, means of production and human lives. All throughout history, the origin of capital has been slavery. Look at this country and the modern world. Without slaves, no cotton; without cotton, no industry; without industry, no finance capital. The original, unnamable sin.” I keep reading through the draft. Of course, not a single mention of slavery.
