Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

by

Louis De Bernières

Alexi is Antonia's husband. Pelagia objects to him at first because he's fifteen years her senior and is overweight and unattractive, but she soon understands why Antonia fell for him: he's extremely kind and wants to be a part of the family. He's a radical communist lawyer who's good at his job; he can bring judges to tears and does what he can to fight for the working class. However, as he gets older, he becomes gradually more conservative. When his son Iannis is born, Alexi completes this transformation. He begins secretly voting for conservative candidates in elections and purchases land to develop vacation rentals so he can pass something to Iannis without tax penalties. Despite this, he's not an involved parent by any means; he often fails to follow through on his promises to his son.
