Sister Penchang is a deeply religious widow living in San Diego who agrees to loan Julí the ransom money for Cabesang Tales on the condition that Julí works for her as a live-in servant until her debt is paid off. For Penchang this is also an opportunity to propagandize Julí, who she sees as lacking in religious education and in need of instruction.
