Amos Ames is a carpenter in the New England town where the Mannons reside. Alongside his wife Louisa, Amos makes up “a chorus representing the town, come to look and listen and spy on the rich and exclusive Mannons.” This chorus functions much like the Greek chorus in O’Neill’s source material, the tragic Greek trilogy known as the Oresteia. Amos resents the “mask” that Christine puts on, a symbol of Mannon stoicism that Louisa sees as a token of the family’s elitism.
