David Mannon Character Analysis

David Mannon was Ezra’s brother and Lavinia and Orin’s uncle. He was also Adam Brant’s father, having conceived his son during a secret affair with the family’s Canadian nurse Marie Brantôme. After Ezra and the rest of the Mannons disinherited David for having sex with a lower-class woman, David became bitter, violent, and depressed, eventually hanging himself when Brant was a teenager. Though David is long dead before Mourning Becomes Electra begins, Brant remains tormented by his father’s abusive behavior toward his mother—epitomizing the dangers of the Mannon family’s elitist beliefs. Seth Beckwith frequently notes that Brant resembles his father to such an extent that he seems like David’s ghost.
