Estelle Horan Character Analysis

Estelle Horan used to live next door to the Whites. She was in high school when Carrie was a toddler, and her mother often feuded with Margaret over Estelle wearing her swimsuit in her backyard, which Margaret found to be provocative. In a magazine interview, Estelle recounts how she once fell asleep wearing a white bikini in her backyard and woke up to a three-year-old Carrie looking curiously at her breasts. When Margaret saw, she screamed and dragged Carrie back into the house, where Estelle could hear Carrie being abused. Some time later, Estelle and her mother witnessed stones rain down from the sky onto the White house—the first major manifestation of Carrie’s powers. In her interview, Estelle says that everyone in Chamberlain wanted to forget the incident, but that there were too many witnesses to deny that it happened.

Nobody wants to believe it, not even now. You and all the people who’ll read what you write will wish they could laugh it off and call me just another nut who’s been out here in the sun too long. But it happened. There were lots of people on the block who saw it happen, and it was just as real as that drunk leading the little girl with the bloody nose. And now there’s this other thing. No one can laugh that off, either. Too many people are dead.

And it’s not just on the Whites’ property any more.
