Charles Moore was an ocean researcher who, like Mary Crowley, took an interest in pollution in Pacific waters. In 1997, Moore avoided conventional sailing wisdom and deliberately sailed into the doldrums (the areas with low wind due to ocean currents), and in the process discovered the massive plastic pollution that came to be known as the Pacific Garbage Patch. Though he was not the first to raise concerns about plastic or about ocean pollution, his article on the subject helped raise awareness and was many people’s first exposure to the existence of a Pacific Garbage Patch.
