by

Maxine Beneba Clarke

Marcus is Maxine’s second boyfriend, whom she meets through debate team. Maxine and Marcus have a good relationship, but she is somewhat uncomfortable with how hard his parents try to be inclusive around her. Their relationship falls apart after Maxine suffers microaggressions from him, such as him eating Golliwog crackers and comparing her hands to those of a possum. As a result, she pulls away from him, much to his confusion and sadness.
