Partition refers to the formation of the new nation of Pakistan, and to the mass migration of Hindus and Muslims that occurred after the dissolution of the British Raj (colonial government). Partition began the day after the British formally granted India its independence, as religious tensions led to the separation of the primarily Muslim Pakistan from the primarily Hindu India. Partition was a time of great loss, violence, and displacement in South Asia.
