In the real world, da Vinci was a prominent painter and engineer and a contemporary of Galileo. In the novel, he is another person whom Wang meets in the medieval Europe version of the Three-Body game. Perhaps because he is an artist, the story presents da Vinci as more patient and open-minded than some of his crueler colleagues.
