The Knife of Never Letting Go

Teachers and parents! Our Teacher Edition on The Knife of Never Letting Go makes teaching easy.
Todd is the narrator and protagonist of the story. At the beginning, he lives in Prentisstown, a settlement on a planet called the New World, with his adoptive parents Ben and Cillian and his dog Manchee. Todd’s Ma and Pa died when he was very young, but his Ma left behind a journal that tells Todd what life used to be like in the town and encourages him to have hope for the future. Todd lives in a world where every man can hear every other man’s thoughts—Noise—but he is surprised one day to encounter a place that has no Noise. This discovery, which goes against everything that settlement leader Mayor Prentiss taught Todd about the world, forces Todd to go off on an adventure. He soon meets Viola, a girl who challenges Todd’s limited view of the world and helps him to realize that it’s possible to get to know someone even without seeing their Noise. Todd is mostly illiterate and initially feels shame over his inability to read his Ma’s journal, but over the course of the story, he learns how to ask Viola for help. Perhaps the most important conflict Todd faces is whether or not it is justified for him to use his knife to kill. Todd is initially embarrassed by his inability to kill, but when he gives in to his rage and stabs a seemingly innocent alien Spackle to death, he learns that violence can come with a terrible cost. A fiery Prentisstown preacher named Aaron chases Todd, trying to provoke him to kill, but Viola ultimately saves Todd from becoming a killer by killing Aaron herself. Todd embodies the difficulties of transitioning from childhood to adulthood, and he ultimately becomes a more mature person by genuinely listening to other people around him (instead of passively consuming their Noise) and rejecting lies he believed in the past.

Cillian comes running up but before he says anything to us, Ben cuts him off and says, “Don’t think it!”

Ben turns to me. “Don’t you think it neither. You cover it up with yer Noise. You hide it. You hide it as best you can.” And he’s grabbing my shoulders as he’s saying it and squeezing tight enough to make my blood jump even more than it already is.

Chapter 5 Quotes

Ben reaches behind his back and unclasps something. He wriggles it for a second or two before it comes unlatched completely. He hands it to me. It’s his hunting knife, the big ratchety one with the bone handle and the serrated edge that cuts practically everything in the world, the knife I was hoping to get for the birthday when I became a man. It’s still in its belt, so I can wear it myself.

“Take it,” he says. “Take it with you to the swamp. You may need it.”

I know what a girl is. Course I do. I seen ’em in the Noise of their fathers in town, mourned like their wives but not nearly so often. I seen ’em in vids, too. Girls are small and polite and smiley. They wear dresses and their hair is long and it’s pulled into shapes behind their heads or on either side. They do all the inside-the-house chores, while boys do all the outside. They reach womanhood when they turn thirteen, just like boys reach manhood, and then they’re women and they become wives.
