Analysis
Sally is cooking for Mr. Ransom, who tries to help but just slows her down. He always moves more slowly than she does, spending hours talking with friends and neighbors around Morgen. She remembers when her father started a romantic relationship with a young widow, and Sally prayed he would marry the woman so Sally could be free from doing Mr. Ransom’s housework. A few weeks later, though, the relationship ended. Sally continues to cook and clean through the afternoon. Later, she calls a priest.
Emmett has a responsibility to Billy, but his privileged status as a young white man leaves him mostly free to pursue a new life. Sally’s duty to her father highlights that adventure is not equally accessible to everyone.
