Lavrentiy Beria was one of the most feared and powerful figures in the Soviet Union under Stalin. Serving as the head of the NKVD from 1938 to 1953, Beria played a central role in orchestrating the Great Purge. Known for his cunning and brutality, he expanded the use of forced labor to fuel Soviet economic projects and directed a widespread campaign of terror against political enemies and perceived threats. Beria also oversaw the Soviet nuclear weapons program, contributing significantly to its development. After Stalin’s death in 1953, Beria attempted to consolidate power but quickly fell out of favor. Khrushchev and other Soviet leaders arrested and executed him later that year. Beria’s legacy remains synonymous with ruthless repression and the darkest chapters of Stalinist rule.
