Nikita Khrushchev Character Analysis

Nikita Khrushchev led the Soviet Union through a period of significant reforms and intense tension during the Cold War. He is best known for initiating de-Stalinization, openly denouncing Stalin's crimes in his “Secret Speech” of 1956 and working to roll back some of the terror that defined Stalin’s regime. Khrushchev attempted to introduce policies aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens and pursued ambitious agricultural and industrial projects, though many of these efforts ended in failure. In The Gulag Archipelago, Solzhenitsyn harshly criticizes Khrushchev, portraying him as a hypocrite and opportunist. Solzhenitsyn points out that Khrushchev played an active role in Stalin's purges, serving as a loyal enforcer who contributed to the terror he later condemned. Despite his denunciation of Stalin, Khrushchev failed to dismantle the oppressive structures he once supported. Instead, he used de-Stalinization selectively, preserving aspects of the regime that suited his own power.
