Drum Major Character Analysis

The drum major is Marie’s lover, though the play only implies that they have consummated their illicit affair. A handsome and self-important man, the drum major’s higher rank and middle-class status imbues him with a vitality and confidence that Woyzeck lacks. Woyzeck begins to suspect Marie’s infidelity after he catches her wearing a pair of earrings the drum major has given her, and his suspicion grows after he spots the couple dancing together at the inn.
