Sergeant Character Analysis

The sergeant is the drum major’s associate. He is with the drum major when they first spot Marie at the fair, and both men are struck by her beauty. When a showman at the fair asks for someone in the audience to loan him their watch to use in a stunt, the sergeant dramatically produces a watch from his pocket, a symbolic gesture that flaunts his wealth and foreshadows his acquaintance’s imminent affair with Marie.
