Analysis
Woyzeck and the drum major are both at the inn. The drum major beats his chest and boasts of his manliness. Then he addresses Woyzeck, urging him to drink. Woyzeck only whistles at him in response. The drum major approaches Woyzeck, and the men fight. Woyzeck loses.
The drum major defeats Woyzeck, effectively putting Woyzeck in his place and reminding him of his low position in the social hierarchy. The public nature of this altercation adds to Woyzeck’s humiliation.
