Showman Character Analysis

At the beginning of Woyzeck, Marie and Woyzeck attend a local fair and watch as a showman leads in a horse that can perform extraordinary tricks, like counting. The showman cites the horse’s talents as proof of the similarities between humans and animals. He encourages his audience to act on their animal impulses, warning that repressing these instincts will only lead to dire consequences.
