Toward the beginning of Woyzeck, Franz Woyzeck discovers Marie, the mother of his child, wearing an unfamiliar pair of gold earrings. When he confronts her about where she got them, she nervously claims to have found the earrings on the ground, when in fact the earrings are likely a gift from the haughty and handsome drum major with whom she is having an affair. Unconvinced by Marie’s explanation, Woyzeck grows more suspicious of her over the course of the play, especially after he spies her dancing with the drum major at a local inn. Woyzeck’s paranoia becomes so intense that it consumes his dreams, and he even starts to hear voices that order him to stab Marie in revenge. Importantly, Woyzeck’s torment isn’t the result of his knowing that Marie is being unfaithful. Indeed, even the audience can’t be sure that Marie has consummated her relationship with the drum major—Büchner cleverly hints at a sexual relationship between the couple without showing it play out. Instead, it is Woyzeck’s suspicions about Marie that cause him such angst, propelling him deeper into madness until he ultimately stabs Marie as punishment for wrongs he suspects—but cannot prove—that she has committed against him. Ultimately, it is Marie’s secrecy and Woyzeck’s paranoia that drive the couple apart. Their respective tragic fates emphasize a person’s limited ability to know the people in their life, even those to whom they are closest.
