Lincoln was Letty’s brother. He died while a student at Oxford after drinking heavily one night and falling asleep near a cart that subsequently ran him over. While Lincoln was alive, Letty was frustrated by the privileges afforded to him as a man, and she resented him for squandering his opportunities at Oxford by drinking more than studying. After Lincoln died, Letty’s father let her attend Babel.
