Mrs. Calvert is the Yankee mother of Cathleen Calvert and Cade and Raiford Calvert who has never really fit in in the South. When the Yankees move through the South burning plantations after the war, the Calverts’ house is saved because of Mrs. Calvert’s Yankee accent. This embarrasses her, and she decides to move back North to be with her native people.
