Sun Lin-lin is a classmate and friend of Ji-li in junior high school. A shy, self-effacing girl, she nevertheless helps Ji-li out. Once, she helps disguise the fact that Ji-li has accidentally forgotten her Red Book at home. Another time, she brings messages and homework to Ji-li when Ji-li isn’t attending school. After the end of the Cultural Revolution, Lin-lin goes to school and becomes a doctor, securing a job at a factory clinic. But when the clinic closes, she loses her job there.
