The 5th Wave: Chapter 65 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
At Evan’s farmhouse, Cassie fell asleep with him by the fireplace and wakes up back in her usual bed. Evan isn’t around, so she goes to the barn to get her M16, which has been recently cleaned. She hasn’t used it on anyone since the Crucifix Soldier. She goes back inside with the rifle. When Evan returns, he says he was just checking the weather. He proposes an idea to her: Let him go by himself to help Sammy rather than her going. Cassie strongly rejects this idea, and Evan admits that’s what he expected.
Although Evan doesn’t talk to Cassie about the M16, the fact that he cleans it for her suggests that he is getting it ready for her to take—and by extension that he trusts her enough to let her wield a deadly weapon. Evan’s proposal to get Sammy himself, while seemingly well-intentioned, misunderstands Cassie and how her motivation is not just to help Sammy but also to have a larger sense of purpose.
