The Crucifix Soldier is a boy a little older than Cassie who is gravely injured. Cassie thinks he’s pulling a gun on her and shoots him, but it turns out the metal object he had in his hand was a crucifix. Although Cassie tries to justify her split-second decision, her shooting of the seemingly innocent Crucifix Soldier haunts her throughout the novel.
