Angeliki Character Analysis

Angeliki is a Somalian refugee who Nuri and Afra meet in Athens. Angeliki lives in a refugee camp at Pedion tou Areos, and her breasts are often leaking milk though she has no child. When she first meets Nuri, she tells him her blood has been poisoned and she is dead. Later, when Nuri and Afra have moved into the park too, she tells them how someone drugged her and stole her baby away from her in the night. Angeliki often speaks to Nuri of Odysseus, how he made his journey only to find his home again. She and Afra become close. Afra draws a picture for Angeliki, who says it will remind her of a better world. Angeliki’s character sheds light on another layer of the refugee experience, as she left home for better opportunities only to become trapped.
