The Beekeeper of Aleppo

by

Christy Lefteri

Nadim is a man from Afghanistan living in Pedion tou Areos when Nuri and Afra are there. He plays an instrument called a rebab with great skill and beauty, and it brings Nuri some peace. In his conversations with Nadim, Nuri notes an underlying sense of danger. These instincts are confirmed when he sees Nadim leading young boys into the woods at night. Fed up with Nuri’s intrusions, Nadim eventually slashes him with a knife. Shortly after, a young boy emerges from the woods claiming Nadim coerced him somehow, and an angry mob of refugees beats him. Nuri picks up a bat and participates, striking the fatal blow to Nadim’s skull. Nuri is conflicted about Nadim’s murder, feeling justified because the man was exploiting children but also guilty because the Qur’an calls for mercy.
