Mr. Fotakis Character Analysis

Mr. Fotakis is a smuggler living in Athens who helps Nuri and Afra escape to England. He agrees to let Nuri make deliveries for him for three weeks in exchange for a lower price for the trip. To do this work, Nuri and Afra have to move into Mr. Fotakis’ apartment. While he makes his deliveries at night, Nuri uses a key to lock Afra in their room, by her request. On the last night before their trip, Nuri forgets the key. When he returns, Afra tells him that Mr. Fotakis came into the room and threatened her life, implying that he raped her. Nuri wants to kill Mr. Fotakis but cannot escape Athens without his help. Mr. Fotakis’s actions highlight the violent, opportunistic side of humanity which takes advantage of people in need.
